7)Center for International Service Learning (ISL)

Website: www.ISLonline.org

Excerpt: This team program presents a unique and exciting opportunity for students to experience medical/dental/veterinary clinical work first hand in the challenging context of both "outback" and urban Central America and Mexico.

Programs & Cost: Independent study possibilities are as extensive as the creativity of the students.  Our staff can, however, offer opportunities and resources especially in the following areas:  1.Natural Medicine.  The history/use of natural medicines and their collection and classification provides not only an interesting academic project but also an opportunity to become involved with local growers and "curanderos" or "spiritual healers".  2. Women's' Health Issues in Latino Culture.  Cultural traditions often deny women in Hispanic culture full access to medical resources.  Explore this problem through both interview and study of relevant institutions.  3. The Role of Myth, Legend, and Religious Beliefs in the practice of medicine in the Two-Thirds World.  Medical/dental practitioners in the "Developed World" are often baffled by the continued preference many people in the Two-Thirds World give to healing practices based on religious beliefs and "superstitions." Check website for more options. Cost ranges from $985 - $1,985 depending on the program.

We have an objective and now need as much help and insight as we can get from others who are closer to the practical aspects of the teaching and learning medicine then writing their findings for journals.

The organization works in small communities to treat diseases and impart knowledge using homeopathy, acupuncture and Chinese medicine, herbal medicine, hydrotherapy, counseling, diet, nutrition, and other naturopathic modalities.  We want to educate local doctors and health care workers on integrative health, so both western/scientific medicine and holistic modalities used in a way that is most appropriate for patients. Our volunteers not only see diverse range of diseases, but they also have a chance to educate local practitioners with their skills. 19)Herbalists Without Borders

Website: http://www.herbalistswithoutborders.org/

Excerpt: Herbalists Without Borders is an international network of herbalists and members of the herbal products business community, traditional healers, students, farmers and farming organizations, consultants, health care workers, and others interested in the role of plants in primary health care, trade, and ecological restoration. Recognizing that a majority of people in the world today live in poverty and do not have access to conventional medical care, we are particularly interested in how information and access to plant medicines can be made more broadly available. Our organization operates through local chapters in both developed and developing nations, whereby the sharing of resources and cross-cultural exchange of information, volunteer service, new ideas, and opportunities for development and support of fair trade in botanical materials and herbal products may be facilitated in new and dynamic ways. We believe in the protection of traditional healers' intellectual property rights, in the preservation of traditional knowledge, and in the fundamental human right to be healed by natural means and by common sense. We invite you to join us as we come together to seek common ground and to bring healing to those who are in need.

Projects & Costs: Herbalists Without Borders offers a variety of travel opportunities and settings for volunteering in the U.S. and abroad.  We encourage our members to engage in fundraising work beyond the costs of travel, to help support the great work being conducted by overseas hosting organizations and by HWB chapters who receive tour groups and volunteers.  Even small donations can make a great deal of difference in the lives of people who do not have sufficient resources.

You can opt to combine traditional and western practices during your placement, thereby creating an all-round medical experience. We can also arrange for you to spend some time in an Acupuncture clinic in Mongolia.

Nursing & Midwifery: Our medicine programs welcome anyone thinking of taking up nursing or midwifery or already training to be a nurse or a midwife. By working on this program, you will make a real contribution in hospitals, clinics and in people's homes. Hospitals and clinics are often understaffed, and you can assist with duties such as bandaging, taking blood pressure, and generally caring for the patients. You will find that your new colleagues and the patients appreciate the fact that you have come a long way to offer practical help. If you're trained, training or considering training to be a Midwife, you could work in a maternity clinic in India. You may also like to consider our Maternity Care placement in Peru. There are many other projects in Mexico, Ghana, China, Bolivia, Argentina. 46)Friends Without A Border

Excerpt: Cambodia's children deserve happy, healthy lives. Friends Without A Border is providing quality medical care, extensive outreach and crucial medical education through Angkor Hospital for Children. Angkor Hospital for Children is recognized by the Cambodian Ministry of Health (MOH) as a pediatric teaching hospital. Its purpose is two-fold. AHC is the provincial referral hospital for Siem Reap province and sees up to 300 out-patients per day and up to 300 in-patients per month. AHC trains doctors, nurses (from AHC and government facilities), nursing students and health center workers, and is funded by the NGO Friends Without A Border (FWAB).

67)Medical Ministry Canada

Website: http://www.mmint.org

Excerpt: Short-term trips are the foundation of our ministry and a gateway for reaching the world's poor who have little or no access to medical care. Since 1968 we have provided two-week opportunities for volunteers to work in medical, dental, surgical, and eye clinics. Every year, around 1500 North American participants go on over 65 missions to more than 20 developing countries.

Programs & Costs: Participants take one or two weeks of vacation time to go and minister to multitudes of people. Volunteers come from a variety of denominational traditions and backgrounds. We are united by our purpose of serving the poor through medicine and sharing the Good News with them. Most projects are general medicine, surgery and dentistry. Eye projects may be surgery only or a full team of eighty including ophthalmology, optometry, opticians, nurses, techs, anesthesia, general helpers and teens. Participants pay for personal airfare plus a participation fee: 2 weeks is $1075 US ($1260 Canadian), and 1 week is $775 US ($910 Canadian).

68)Medical Missions Response

Website: http://www.mmronline.org

Excerpt: MMR links volunteer healthcare workers with strategic, short-term, healthcare opportunities around the world. Strategic opportunities are those that enable the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ to advance into new areas where it has never been. MMR specifically targets unreached people groups in the 10/40 window.

Programs & Costs: Welcomes all health care practitioners. Volunteer healthcare workers come from many different agencies and fellowships and are bound together by their commitment to obey Christ's Great Commission. MMR guides the missionaries in the strategic use of medical ministries to advance their work. However, MMR does not generate projects. The local missionaries design projects around their particular strategies, location, and people group, and then MMR responds by recruiting volunteers to fulfill these requests. Short term projects typically range from 2-4 weeks. Volunteers do pay their own way through MMR.  The cost will vary from location to location.  Our least expensive trip is $2200 with our most expensive running about $3200.  All of our trips are flat rate donations to MMR that cover you from your home airport until you return except for souvenirs or personal trips (if you need to know more detailed qualifications, let me know).  Mostly we cover airfare, visas (if needed), room and board, transport, medications used, translators, etc.

69)Mexican Medical Ministries

Website: http://www.mexicanmedical.com/

Excerpt: Mexican Medical Ministries is an interdenominational non-profit organization, founded in 1963, dedicated to providing low or no-cost health care to the people of Mexico in the Name of Jesus Christ.

Programs & Costs:  We routinely offer dental, general medical, chiropractic and optometry services. We are always open to new ideas. Consider serving for 1 to 3 years as a Short Term Missionary. As a Short Term missionary you will be encouraged and mentored as you find your own ministry to the people of Mexico. You would be involved with a seasoned and experienced full-time missionary who would share their experience with you and help you determine what God's Plan is for your life. The cost for trips with us depends on the ministry location and time in Mexico.  Four times a year we have one day trips to Tijuana to help in a large health fair put on by one of the large churches down there.  The cost is $100.00 which includes transportation over the border, meals for the day, and supplies used in the health fair.  A Weekender to Loreto cost $495 dollars plus your airfare to get there.  The fee covers room and board for the four days.  Twice a year we go to Palenque on week long trips and they cost around $800.00.  Food and van rental are the biggest part of that fee.

70)Project Amazon

Website: http://www.projectamazon.org

Excerpt: One of PAZ's core values is to minister to the whole person that is spirit, soul and body. Though sharing the gospel and planting churches is always our first priority, the love of Christ compels us to address the enormous health needs of the people we serve. The river villages in which we work generally have no doctor, no dentist, no health clinic, no drug store, little or no electricity, and no reliable source of clean water. Many people in these communities suffer from poor hygiene and poor nutrition, and few have the money to travel to a city hospital should they become seriously ill. Thus even simple health problems like an infected cut or abscessed tooth often go untreated, leading to blood poisoning and sometimes even death.

Programs & Costs: To meet these needs, the mission currently operates six health boats that are based in different parts of the Amazon. These boats, equipped to do minor surgery and stocked with medicines, are floating clinics that reach some of the most needy river communities in the Amazon and treat thousands of patients each year. If you are a health professional, we urge you to consider giving of yourself to this life-saving mission. The Amazonian river communities that we serve may be hidden, but they are not forgotten. Health volunteers generally stay in the Amazon for one to two weeks, traveling aboard one of our large health boats. The PAZ boats typically visit two or three river villages during the trip, offering medical and dental care to Brazilians who rarely if ever get to see a doctor or dentist. Truly, this is a life-saving ministry that bears much eternal fruit. We have health boat trips scheduled for various times of the year. We can provide guest quarters, local transportation and other logistical support.

71)Project Rescue of Amazon Youth (PRAY)

Website: http://catherine19640.tripod.com/

Excerpt: The city of Jacunda in the state of Para has a large number of children living in abject poverty. They suffer from malnutrition, abandonment, illness, lack of medical care and medicine, and have no way to gain life-sustaining skills. Safe drinking water is also often unavailable. Many children are born to adolescent mothers or abandoned by parents who are unable to care for them. P.R.A.Y. has established a mission in Jacunda, Para, Brazil to assist the children by providing shelter, medical assistance, and life skills. We strive for Unity by being of one mind, spirit, and purpose.  Our goal is to connect with and love the people, not to change them.  We agree to serve and help one another at all times with humility, diligence, and excellence. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer for P.R.A.Y. should be committed, individually and as part of our team, to loving God and serving the people of Brazil.  We do this by respecting and caring for His people, without passing judgment on them.

Program & Costs: Volunteers are under the supervision of the General Manager and Directors of the mission.  Medical volunteers will be also under the supervision of the Doctor in charge of the clinic.  The mission is located in the North of Brazil and conditions can be uncomfortable and unpleasant.  The climate is tropical, and is usually hot and humid.  As for cost we have a $25 fee for background check, and all travel is the responsibility of the volunteer.
